What makes a great read?

Riveting creation is not easy. Believe me, I've rewritten my paranormal romance ten times, only to dismember its lifeless form to start over. It lacked depth and honest motivation. Soul. Like Dr. Frankenstein, I returned to the lab and slaved over the dead conflict, flaccid characters, and learned.
Because I'm stubborn, my manuscript is undergoing a transfusion in hopes that it will be animated into more than words. Joined to heart, and fitted with emotion, the true stuff of life and a writers lightening, it may yet breathe.

My hope? That when I throw the switch and send my finished manuscript out into the elements, the heavens will strike, and call it good.

I'd love to hear your comments.
Thanks for joining me.

  2. Get used to it. I've been writing for 16 years (maybe a little longer) and I can't count how many times I've rewritten my stories. It's just part of the writer's world, I suppose. We are NEVER satisfied with our work! lol

  4. Aw Sandy, your blog is beautiful.
I love writing and everything connected to it. But tearing a wip down only to rebuild can be tough. We have to believe in the plot, themes, characters. Most of all, we must believe in ourselves. Believe in our ability to keep going until (as you say in your side bar) it finds THE only shore that matters.

    Good luck in all endeavors!

  5. Congratulations and good luck. I love the look of it. Have fun! I try not to be so serious about my blog. If you want serious go to my web site. But the nice thing about blogs? You can do what you want.

  6. Sandy,
Congrats on taking the blog step. The bio was beautifully written. I have high hopes for your writing talent.

    Now do it faster...

  7. Finally, you have a blog and it's still the 21st century! Sandy, I love your story. Will I recognize it when its done or will it be a total makeover? Hang in there. Still revising...it's "Groundhog Day" everyday I sit at the computer. Looks good. Congrats.

  8. Hemingway said writing is rewriting. I probably don't do enough of it. I get eager after two or three run throughs and submit to my agent. My husband, who also writes, stresses all morning on whether to put in a comma and then broods about it all afternoon until he takes it back out. We all have our own style. Love the look of your blog. Stop by and visit Vintage Vonnie sometime.

  10. Congratulations on the blog, Sandy. I like the sleek look!

I did that a lot with my first book, too. No discouragement intended but mine is still on the shelf. Whatever happens with your first is a learning experience.

If you haven't already, get started on your second now. It will be so much better, from the beginning, because of what you learned on the first. Your third, even better.

    Happy Writing!

  11. There is editing and rewriting and then there is obsessing over every word. I think it comes to a point with your manuscript like, with children, you have to kick them out of the nest.

  12. Sandy, welcome to the blogsphere. I haven't quite gotten the hang of knowing when to kick the manuscript out. I have three (2 fulls and one near full) and I keep going back and obsessing.

I'm humbled by the show of support, as I've been by the tremendous talent you've shared with me.

  15. Nice blog, Sandy, and a great piece on rewrites. Been there, and still cringe when I have to rewrite. We love words so this is what we must do...

  16. Love the look of your blog, Sandy. Way to go and have fun with it.

They say that even when you read your published work, you will still find areas you wish you would have changed, things you could have made better.

And even when you think you have it perfect, your soon to be editor will disagree. So don't obsess too long. Get your ms out there.

Again, congrats on your new space.

  17. Sandy, I think I have re-written my story so many times that my computer is saying "Enough already, let it die."

I love that you have a stubborn spirit. That you won't let it go. That is the heart and passion of a true writer. Don't give up. I know I will be seeing you on the self soon!

  18. Thank you for all the comments.

This is the last time through this current ms. It needs to do more than hang on. If it doesn't burst with life, I'm planning to shoot it.
